- Bullet Point News has received an increasing number of reports showing our content being blocked on Instagram and Facebook due to Bill C-18.
- Known as the Online News Act, the legislation requires social media and tech companies to compensate dwindling news organizations for the posting of news content on their sites.
- Instead of agreeing to pursue payment plans as dictated by the legislation, Meta has chosen to begin blocking Canadian users from publishing and viewing news content.
- “As we prepare to comply with the legislation, we are announcing today that we will begin tests on both platforms that will limit some users and publishers from viewing or sharing some news content in Canada,” Meta said in a recent press release.
- As Bullet Point News will be blocked more regularly, we are launching a weekly newsletter to ensure important local and civic news is delivered to the community.
- Aside from bookmarking and visiting our homepage, Residents can utilize the above link and see the week’s stories delivered directly to inboxes each Friday.
- The Federal government is standing firm behind the bill.
- “It levels the playing field by putting the power of big tech in check and ensuring that even our smallest news business can benefit through this regime and receive fair compensation for their work,” Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez stated.
- “The fact that these internet giants would rather cut off Canadians’ access to local news than pay their fair share is a real problem, and now they’re resorting to bullying tactics to try and get their way. It’s not going to work,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said during a recent press conference.
- This is an ongoing story.
