Joining fellow York Region Mayors and Chairman Wayne Emmerson, Mayor Iain Lovatt met with Members of Parliament in Ottawa from April 19-21 to discuss Regional and Town concerns.
“We had incredibly productive meetings with Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries, Members of Parliament, and Senators,” Mayor Lovatt said in a recent press release.
The delegation advocated for funding assurances covering the Yonge North Subway Extension, the Region’s continued conversion to zero-emission transit vehicles, and additional VIVA bus rapid transit phases.
Federal funding to further affordable housing efforts and continued grant funding were also discussed, as well as supports to help end chronic homelessness in the Region
Mayor Lovatt’s office highlighted his conversation with Minister Ahmed Hussen regarding National Housing Strategy funding, which would help enable phase 2 of Housing York’s 5676 Main Street project.
In a meeting with with Parliamentary Secretary Jennifer O’Connell, Mayor Lovatt discussed the need for further ICIP support to help cover Stouffville’s inflated skating trail budget. “She is aware of the issue and committed to working with her colleagues in Ottawa towards a solution,” Mayor Lovatt’s office told Bullet Point News.
Investments in local economic development, tourism supports, and increased funding for municipalities were also covered.
