- Helena Jaczek, Markham-Stouffville’s Member of Parliament, has decided not to seek re-election.
- “After 50 years of public service as a family doctor, Regional Medical Of Health and Commissioner of Health Services, Member of Provincial Parliament, and now Member of Parliament for Markham-Stouffville, I have decided that I will not seek re-election after my current term,” she said in a recent social media announcement.
- Jaczek is currently serving as the Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Receiver General for Canada.
- Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Carolyn Bennett, and Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard Joyce Murray have also decided against running again, signalling a likely cabinet shuffle on the horizon.
- She thanked Markham-Stouffville residents for their support and confidence and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for entrusting her with multiple roles in Cabinet and on Cabinet Committees.
- “It has been an immense honour and a privilege to represent our community at both the provincial and federal levels as well as serving in Cabinet at both levels. I have always fought for what was important for this community, our province, and for Canada, and I will continue to do so,” she added.
- Jaczek was first elected as Markham-Stouffville’s MP in 2019 after serving as an Ontario MPP from 2007 to 2018.
