Summer camps will take place at 10 venues throughout the municipality this year. According to data provided by the Town, camp registrations increased by 60% in 2024. This growth came with a 114% increase in summer recreation job applications, enabling Stouffville to provide camp programming to more than 1,300 children.
“We have significantly expanded recreation offerings to better serve our community’s diverse interests,” Town spokesperson Cassandra Papas said in comments to Bullet Point News.
“The Town has expanded into STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), theater, cooking, and nature-based programming,” Papas added. “We’ve also introduced unique offerings such as Jr. Firefighter Camp, and new programs in 2025 include Strength and Conditioning, Jr. Entrepreneurs, and Jr. Fitness camps.”
In 2023, Stouffville employed a total of 22 summer camp staff members. To meet increased demand, 2025 will require 35 employees, including one coordinator, 10 supervisors, and 24 counselors.
Additionally, summer aquatics programming has been running seven days a week since 2022. The total number of summer swim lessons increased from 396 in 2022 to 541 in 2024, with aquatics staff growing from 75 to 106 employees to support local swimmers.
“Many of our employees are both local and returning,” Papas noted. “The growth in staffing demonstrates the Town’s efforts to meet increased participation while fostering local employment opportunities.”
Stouffville has also made progress in reducing program cancellations through improved planning and responsive programming. This was achieved by listening to community feedback and focusing on high-demand activities, Bullet Point News was told.
Camp and program fees cover most costs, including staffing and supplies. This ensures sustainability while minimizing the use of tax dollars to provide recreation services.
“We remain committed to providing high-quality programming at an accessible cost while ensuring prudent use of tax dollars,” Papas said.
The 2025 Day Camps Guide has been released, detailing more than 30 camps taking place over the course of nine summer weeks. Some camps also offer before and after care, and registration opens February 4 through the Town’s registration portal.
A Summer Camp Open House is scheduled for Saturday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Leisure Centre. The event will allow families to learn more about camp offerings, meet staff, and ask questions.
“The Town continues to be creative with facility usage by utilizing various parks and spaces while balancing existing programming,” Papas concluded. “We remain focused on offering activities that align with community interests and trends, leading to increased participation and program sustainability.”
