A freezing rain warning is in effect for Stouffville, with significant ice accumulation expected to begin tonight and last through the weekend.

Environment Canada is forecasting ice accretion between five and 10 millimetres, which could lead to hazardous conditions, power outages, and localized flooding.

Precipitation is expected to start as rain before transitioning to freezing rain tonight. Temperatures may fluctuate around the freezing mark on Saturday, potentially causing some areas to shift back to rain and experience less ice buildup. Conditions are expected to improve by midday Sunday.

Sidewalks, roads, and parking lots will likely become icy and slippery, posing risks to motorists and pedestrians. The weight of accumulated ice may also cause tree branches to break.

Officials advise residents to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve and to take precautions in case of power outages. Public Safety Canada also recommends having an emergency kit with essentials such as drinking water, food, medication, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.

For flooding concerns, residents can check for updates from the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. More information on emergency preparedness is available at getprepared.gc.ca.

Environment Canada urges the public to stay updated on weather alerts and forecasts. Severe weather reports can be sent via email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or shared on X using the hashtag #ONStorm.
