Stouffville’s first Terry Fox Run took place in 1982, and $2.2 million has been raised through 2023. Nearly 600 Canadian communities host a Terry Fox Run every fall with proceeds supporting the Terry Fox Foundation. Focusing on funding innovative cancer research, the organization has been working toward Fox’s dream of a world without cancer for over 40 years.

“Stouffville businesses, service clubs, churches, families, and sports organizations are encouraged to form a team,” a recent press release explained. “Teams receive special recognition during the event and can pre-order Terry Fox T-shirts with their team name printed on them.”

Organizers are also inviting cancer survivors to register for the event. Those who do so are given a special red shirt and lawn sign to recognize their survivor status.

“Seeing the red shirts in our crowd every year provides such a sense of hope and resilience,” Co-Chair Stacey FitzPatrick said. “They continue to inspire us, and we welcome anyone in our community who is a survivor or currently battling to get in touch if they would like a red shirt and join us on run day so we can celebrate with you.”

Just under $6,000 of the events $72,000 fundraising goal has been raised at the time of publishing this article. Residents interested in helping with event promotion can request a 2024 Terry Fox Run lawn sign by sending organizers an email request. Volunteers will deliver the signs on or around September 1.

“The Stouffville Terry Fox Run is a shining example of community collaboration for a well-known cause, and I have always thought it’s the best day of the year,” Co-Chair Adele Palmer stated. “It’s a beautiful day of hope and raising money and awareness for The Terry Fox Foundation. That research saves countless lives and makes survival an option for those who are battling.”
