With summer jobs growing increasingly competitive, York Region is pitching its 2026 Summer Student Program as a paid, skills-building opportunity for local youths looking to gain experience in their personal areas of interest.
Applications for the four-month program are now open and will be accepted until Jan. 25, with successful candidates expected to begin work on May 4. York Region hires close to 300 students each year across a wide range of departments and municipalities, including Whitchurch-Stouffville, Markham, Vaughan, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Aurora, King, East Gwillimbury, and Georgina.
York Region says the program is designed to provide more than just seasonal employment. Students are placed in roles intended to expose them to public-sector work while contributing to community-focused projects.
“As a student at York Region, you will not only gain exposure in the public sector, but also have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful initiatives, connect with leaders and peers, and explore your career path to find your passion,” the Region states on its website.
Placements may be made across a broad range of departments, based on organizational needs. Available roles span community, health, legal, and administrative services, as well as engineering and infrastructure, marketing and communications, and planning and transportation.
The program runs through August, with students typically working between 35 and 40 hours per week. Pay rates are tied to job classifications and years of completed post-secondary education, with posted hourly wages ranging from $17.94 to $28.63.
To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a full-time secondary or post-secondary program and must be returning to full-time studies following the summer term. Verification of enrollment will be required, and positions may require additional credentials and documentation such as a driver’s license and police background check.
The Region says it aims to foster a learning environment where student contributions are valued and innovation is encouraged, and placements are intended to align with students’ interests and career goals.
In addition to summer student roles, York Region also offers co-op and practicum placements throughout the year. Those positions are posted by participating schools and institutions, with applications submitted through their hiring processes.
