York Region Transit (YRT) is set to deliver another service boost for Stouffville riders, extending operating hours in its two local On-Request areas and expanding the On-Request service zone in the town’s west end starting August 31.
The changes build on YRT’s recent efforts to expand travel options in the municipality, including the addition of two-way Route 9 service in 2024 and the launch of a weekend Route 9 bus trial in June.
On-Request Stouffville will see its weekday operating hours nearly double, with all-day service running from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. The on-demand service connects Ballantrae and Stouffville’s urban area, linking riders to Route 9 as well as the Stouffville and Old Elm GO stations. Currently, the service operates on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and again from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
On-Request Gormley will be folded into an expanded On-Request North-Central service area, which spans much of York Region from Aurora to Pefferlaw. At present, On-Request Gormley runs only on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., connecting riders to the Gormley GO station and YRT’s Route 90 and Route 24.
Following the merger at the end of the month, riders in Gormley, Vandorf, and Preston Lake will gain all-day weekday service from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., as well as weekend operations from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays and holidays.
The added service for those in Vandorf and Preston Lake reflects commitments YRT made last year, which were featured in a presentation to Stouffville’s Council. It will also include new connections to Aurora and the Bloomington GO station.
“In response to customer feedback, surveys, and demand, YRT is bringing more flexible and accessible transit options to the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville through our On-Request service,” Richard Montoya, Director for York Region Transit, said in comments to Bullet Point News. “On-Request…makes it easier than ever to ride to work, appointments, shopping, or to see friends.”
Lastly, for the upcoming 2025–26 school year, YRT will add an extra afternoon trip for the St. Katharine Drexel School Special. Departing Meridian Drive and Sutton Railway at 3:54 p.m., it will provide additional capacity for local students.
“As the Mayor and Vice-Chair of Transportation Services at York Region, increasing transit routes for Stouffville is always top of mind,” Mayor Iain Lovatt told us. “I am happy to see both increased ridership this summer and YRT’s increased On-Request service.”
“As we grow as a town, I will continue to advocate for increased routes and On-Request for our residents,” he added.
