• The Town has released new interior renderings for the Ballantrae Multi-Sport Complex.
  • Plans show more than 12,000 square metres of indoor court facilities alongside seating, lounge, and clubhouse spaces.
  • The project includes 24 pickleball courts, a full-size FIFA soccer pitch, and a new three-lane indoor track.
  • The dome will be built through a partnership with Mentana Group, after a prior deal with Ballantrae Sports Group fell through.
  • Construction is targeted to begin this season, with the facility expected to open by fall 2026.

New renderings for Stouffville’s long-awaited Ballantrae sports dome reveal an expansive, multi-purpose facility with over 12,000 square metres of open court space. The proposed design also includes dedicated training areas, spectator bleachers, lounge seating, and a clubhouse.

Engineering plans for the new Ballantrae Multi-Sport Complex call for 24 pickleball courts, four basketball courts, four padel courts, two baseball practice cages, and a full-size soccer pitch that meets FIFA regulations. A new addition to the facility is a three-lane, 350-metre-long track that will encircle the soccer field.

The Ballantrae sports dome interior layout includes over 12,000 square metres of court and field space.

The Town has partnered with Mentana Group to deliver the project, following the collapse of an earlier agreement with the Ballantrae Sports Group. The updated plans consolidate the facility into a single large-scale dome with a front-facing bricks-and-mortar clubhouse, replacing previous plans for two linked domes and increasing the interior footprint.

“The goal is to get into the ground this construction season so some work can get underway,” said Rob Braid, Stouffville’s Commissioner of Community Services, in a conversation with Bullet Point News. “Construction of the dome itself is not a lengthy process. It is the clubhouse building that will take time.”

According to Braid, Mentana consulted local sports and community groups to help inform the final design. The Town is aiming for the facility to open by fall 2026, aligning with rising demand for indoor winter sports venues.

The facility will feature basketball, pickleball, and padel courts, as well as batting cages, a track, and a soccer pitch.

“We start closing sports fields at the end of September,” Braid explained. “That fall timeline is when we usually close all of our outdoor amenities, so these organizations are going to need the indoor options then.”

Mentana also plans to serve food, and the lounge and clubhouse areas will be accessible to players, spectators, and members of the public. While some concerns have been raised about the use of public parkland for a privately operated facility, Braid said the dome will provide much-needed recreation space the Town cannot currently develop on its own.

“They are providing something we cannot,” he said. “I look at an organization like the Stouffville Soccer Club, which faces a great deal of demand, and they can’t grow unless this facility happens.”

The dome will also include a variety of seating and lounge areas.

As previously reported in May, Braid confirmed that Mentana will not pay to use the land. However, preferred rental rates will be extended to local sports organizations, and a portion of the dome’s space will occasionally be allocated for Town-run recreation programming at no cost to the municipality. Rental fees for other community bookings will be determined by Mentana.

“This new complex will provide residents with opportunities to participate in various sports activities, fostering physical activity and community engagement,” the Town states on the project website. “The facility’s modern design and accessibility ensure that it will be a valuable asset for people of all ages, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle throughout the year.”
