The BU14 Stouffville Mustangs secured their second victory in a 3-1 home match against the Thornhill Thunder.
Team captain Karthick Thushanthan got things started, scoring an early goal in the first half.
Daniel Iljeh’s power kick from the far right saw the Mustangs up 2-0.
Thornhill didn’t give up, however, and they powered through for an early second half score.
A handball penalty saw Thushanthan line up for a penalty kick. He lifted the ball and it bounced off the goalkeeper’s mitts, but the team captain rushed in for the rebound.
He kicked it hard to the right and in, and the Mustangs locked in their win.
Following the match, Thushanthan explained how he dealt with added pressure in the second half:
“We were still on the offensive at the beginning of the second half,” he said. “Around 70% into time, I decided to go back and play more defence to put pressure on Thornhill. I didn’t want them to have more chances to shoot on Jalen Banks, our goalkeeper.”
The Mustangs are now preparing to face a skilled Newmarket team next week.
