- Approximately 50 Hooverwood Court area neighbours met with local Councillor Sue Sherban and Mayor Iain Lovatt at the Ken Laushway Woods entrance to discuss the proposed disc golf course.
- “Parking is the number one concern,” Sherban said, as residents fear players’ vehicles will occupy local roads due to a lack of nearby public parking.
- Safety is also top of mind, with worries about increased traffic and the possibility of errant frisbees hitting park users.
- “I don’t want to be walking down a trail and get hit in the head with a frisbee,” someone commented.
- Attendees discussed the premium they paid for homes against a court and peaceful green space, worried the increased traffic and park use will lower property values.
- Possible ecological impacts on the forest were also raised. “You’re taking away this forest and giving it to outside disc golf players,” one local resident declared.
- Residents were actively organizing throughout the meeting, and both Sherban and Lovatt advised they stay informed, email concerns, and utilize upcoming meetings.
- “Your concerns need to be addressed,” Councillor Sherban told the group. “There are a lot of unanswered questions, and I shared them and all of your emails and concerns with staff.”
- Lovatt and Sherban reminded the group that a decision had not yet been made regarding the proposed course location.
- A course concept for the Laushway Woods will be put forward at the upcoming public information session, according to Lovatt, which is now scheduled for 7 p.m. on June 6 at the Leisure Centre.
- Community members can learn more and further speak to the issue then. They can also present to Council at the June 21 meeting when a course location decision is expected.
- “For all decisions, I have to take the whole town into consideration,” Lovatt told the group. “But listening to you, those who live here, is far more important.”
- Bullet Point News is investigating this further and will have more to report.
