- Kim Stark of the Stouffville Lions Club and Hummingbird Hub’s Laura Cusack have joined together to launch two inventive social and environmental charitable projects that are especially engaging and fun for students.
- The first project supplies recycled pill bottles to Doctors Without Borders, aiding the dispensing of medications in developing countries.
- Volunteers clean and pack used pill bottles, which are collected at IDA Pharmacy and donation boxes at the Stouffville Arena and Stouffville United Church.
- The second project utilizes milk bags collected from the community to weave sleeping mats for unhoused and in-need individuals and families.
- A labour intensive process, the bags are cleaned, cut, folded, and woven into mats sized for children and adults.
- Heralded as a win-win, both projects help keep waste out of our landfills while providing useful products to people in need.
- Stouffville volunteers have already shipped out 1,100 pill bottles, and mats are provided locally and to the City Street Outreach organization for distribution throughout the GTA.
- Residents can participate on Wednesday evenings between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at Stouffville United Church.
- Students are also encouraged to attend and can earn their community hours, and drop-ins are welcome
I have been collecting pill bottles and milk bags from my own church and community in Claremont and it’s very convenient to leave them in your drop box so thank you! But recently I was told you are no longer recycling pill bottles. Is this the case?
Thank you,
Gabrielle.
