York Region is experiencing a substantial decline in major crime categories, according to a mid-year update issued by York Regional Police (YRP) on Monday.

As of June 25, 2025, the number of homicides has dropped 67 percent compared to the same period last year, falling from nine to three. Break and enters involving homes and businesses have also declined, down 11 percent from 1,189 to 1,057 incidents.

Carjackings have been cut nearly in half, with 21 reported this year, down from 41, and auto thefts have decreased 37 percent, from 1,722 in 2024 to 1,080 so far in 2025.

“The continued decline in auto theft and carjackings is a direct result of York Regional Police’s targeted enforcement efforts and regional task force initiatives,” YRP stated. “These numbers reflect the success of dedicated operations aimed at dismantling organized crime networks and addressing the root causes of vehicle-related crimes.”

Hate-motivated crimes have also seen notable reductions. Year to date, YRP has reported a 25 percent overall decline, from 150 incidents in 2024 to 112 this year. Cases tied to race or ethnicity dropped 14 percent, religion-related incidents saw a 43 percent decrease, and hate crimes based on sexual orientation fell by 60 percent. Offences targeting property also declined significantly, down 45 percent.

YRP says it remains committed to prevention-focused policing, public visibility, and strengthening ties with the community. Officers have increased patrols across neighbourhoods to both deter criminal activity and enhance public reassurance.

“York Regional Police continues to make strides in reducing crime across the region, reinforcing York Region’s status as one of the safest communities in Canada,” YRP added.

Police are urging residents and business owners to remain vigilant, report suspicious behaviour, and invest in preventive measures such as security systems, noting that community safety is a shared responsibility.
