- Approval was granted to Councillor Upton’s motion, which requested Staff once again reach out to the province to reaffirm Council’s desire to designate Highway 404 Greenbelt and Oak Ridges Moraine lands for employment purposes.
- Staff will include projected financial and tax-base diversification benefits as part of their outreach, and they will compile a report for Council outlining the history of Stouffville’s requests regarding the 404 lands. Councillor Sherban was the only Council member who voted against the motion.
- Councillor Kroon saw his motion passed which seeks greater enforcement and penalties for illegal land uses, such as businesses operating on residential lands, throughout Stouffville.
- York Region Transit (YRT) provided a presentation to council regarding their 2024 transit initiatives, which we will cover in detail in an upcoming piece.
- Staff provided a mid-year financial report showing well-controlled spending against the 2023 budget. We will cover this in greater detail in an upcoming piece as well.
- Bucking Staff recommendations, Council approved a change of address request due to the homeowners’ cultural wishes. Staff have been asked to investigate a by-law solution that would avoid an influx of similar requests to Council in future.
- Council discussed and approved a new fee to be paid by organizers of community events looking to involve Fire & Emergency Services vehicles and staff—such as featuring a fire truck and members of the fire department. The fee will assist in covering necessary overtime pay while ensuring Stouffville Fire and Emergency Services can operate at full capacity when participating in such events.
- New Public Works fees were also approved for 2024, including raising the cost of garbage tags to $3.00. New Development Services fees were approved, as well.
- Council awarded a $968,828 contract to Viking-Cives Ltd. for one single-axle plow truck and one tandem axle plow truck, supported through the Town’s 2023 capital budget.
- A Water Meter Replacement Program update was provided, as was a report on the upcoming Bethesda Side Road resurfacing project between Woodbine Avenue and Warden Avenue.
When will the construction at Highway 48 and Stouffville Road be complete? The state of this intersection, which serves as the entrance to our town is an embarrassment. Is any work actually taking place? If this is not a municipal project, what can be done to escalate this for a faster resolution?
Thanks for the inquiry. We discussed that project with both the Ministry of Transportation as well as Minister Calandra’s office earlier in the summer. They committed to finishing the project by the end of the year, however they also said work would have resumed by now. We will look for updates next week and report back with what we learn.
