In a press release today, York Regional Police (YRP) announced charges against an 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old male following a series of rock-throwing incidents in Stouffville and Markham.

According to YRP, both individuals are facing a Mischief under $5,000 charge after a rock was thrown at a parked vehicle near Stalmaster Road and Neeley Road in Markham. The alleged offence occurred on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 26.

In addition, YRP has laid a second Mischief under $5,000 charge against the 17-year-old. He has been accused of throwing a rock at a moving vehicle in the area of Highway 48 and Hoover Park Drive last July.

Neither individual has been identified, as both were minors at the time of the offences.

Numerous rock-throwing incidents have been reported throughout the region since last summer. In September, a vehicle crashed on Highway 48 after being hit, sending occupants to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A GO bus was also struck on the highway in December, and reports of damage to parked vehicles due to suspected rock-throwing have been common in Stouffville.

YRP is investigating a total of 29 rock-throwing incidents and said more charges are expected.
