- At a council meeting on January 11, 2023, Stouffville council officially voiced its opposition to the province’s Bill 23 – joining nearly every other municipality in the GTHA.
- Developers normally pay Development Charges (DCs) to a municipality for new builds. At both the town and the region, these DCs help pay for the costs of growth, housing services, and social housing.
- A staff report to Stouffville council concluded that the town could lose $19.6 million in revenue between 2024 and 2028 because of Bill 23.
- Council also took issue with changes that Bill 23 would make to the planning and funding of new parkland, as the legislation caps the amount developers have to contribute to construct parks and removes the ability of municipalities to decide where parks in new developments should be constructed.
- Stouffville residents have been protesting in front of MPP Paul Calandra’s office and at Queen’s Park.
- Bullet Point News invited MPP Calandra for an interview but has not received a response.
