- Jefferson Salamander migration season is back in effect as the endangered species prepares for a return to their overwintering habitat.
- Nestled within Oak Ridges Moraine Natural Core Area just outside Stouffville’s border, Richmond Hill hosts one of Ontario’s few remaining Jefferson Salamander populations.
- After spending their breeding season and summer in area ponds and wetlands, the amphibians return to deciduous forests for the winter.
- These nocturnal animals prefer to migrate on rainy nights, making their crossing of Stouffville Road especially perilous.
- In order to protect them and facilitate their journey, York Region and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority will occasionally close Stouffville Road between Bayview and Leslie throughout the month of October.
- Road closures will only occur on rainy evenings between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. from October 6 to October 29.
- Signs will be posted to help guide motorists around the obstruction, and local access will be maintained.
