Whitchurch-Stouffville’s Fire & Emergency Services (WSFES) is asking residents to exercise extreme caution with any open burning.
“The current local fire hazard rating in York Region has been assessed as high,” a recent press release explains.
WSFES is asking for vigilance when it comes to the use of fire pits, open-air burning, and wood-fired BBQs.
They have advised that a burn ban may be put in place if hot and dry conditions continue.
The Town also wants to remind residents of minimum requirements when it comes to burning activities:
The fire must be contained and not exceed dimensions of .75m x .75m in diameter and height.
Only clean wood products should be burned, ensuring smoke is not impacting neighbours.
Continuous supervision of the fire is required until it is completely extinguished.
A means of extinguishment must be readily available.
Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters from any combustible materials.
Fires should not be lit when wind speeds exceed 20kph, when frequent changes in wind direction occur, or when visibility is compromised on any nearby highway.
Fires that emit excessive smoke, sparks, or cause a nuisance are strictly prohibited.
“WSFES strongly advises all residents to adhere to these guidelines to ensure the safety of themselves, their neighbours, and the entire community,” the press release states. “Stay informed and stay safe during this period of heightened fire risk.”
