According to the PSA, “The Town of Stouffville’s Animal Services team has responded to reports of geese in distress at multiple locations.”
Staff wear gloves and masks when collecting deceased birds and disinfect their clothing and equipment with veterinary grade disinfecting solutions.
The Town then submits samples for testing to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative.
Residents are advised to keep their distance from wild birds and animals and to avoid any contact with those appearing sick or deceased.
Although some wild birds may get sick and die, others can be infected and still appear healthy.
Residents should also avoid contact with bird droppings and thoroughly wash their hands following contact with water or other surfaces frequented by birds.
Cats should be kept indoors and pets should be leashed to avoid any contact with sick or deceased wildlife.
Residents should also consider removing backyard bird feeders and baths.
Report any animals appearing sick or deceased to Animal Services by calling 905-640-1900 or emailing customer.service@townofws.ca.
