- Thanks to the efforts of organizer Susan Tucker and around 50 volunteer creators, Stouffville’s Civic Square is now displaying over 6,000 knitted poppies in commemoration of Remembrance Day.
- With the sun rising over Civic Square this morning, Tucker joined Town Staff as they adorned the clock tower with the hand-made poppies.
- The display, which surrounds a wreath hung inside the tower, serves as a poignant tribute to the many soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.
- This is Tucker’s second year working on the project. She inspired a similar effort in Orangeville, with the two municipalities exchanging a set of poppies to include in their respective installations.
- “It is so important to reflect on and remember our fallen soldiers,” Tucker told Bullet Point News. “This project is a way to raise awareness of Remembrance Day and what it means, and it helps teach our children the value of the Act of Remembrance.”
- Visitors can add additional poppies to the mesh wall behind the clock tower, which are provided in a bucket on-site.
- Downtown businesses are also displaying Remembrance Day artworks. They were created by Harry Bowes Public School students led by local art teacher MC Torres and the 4th Stouffville Embers Girl Guides group.
- Tucker looks forward to expanding the project in future years, and anyone interested in offering their time and crochet skills can email her here.
- The poppies will be on display until November 12.
