Since 2021, the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville has suspended its three-hour parking limit and permitted overnight on-street parking from December 24 to December 26 and December 31 to January 1.
During their meeting on December 6, Council established this holiday parking program permanently, ensuring the automatic enactment of the change every year.
However, thanks to an amendment from Councillor Rick Upton, the parking relief was extended and will now be in effect from December 22 to January 1.
The program allows residents to enjoy the holidays with family and friends without having to worry about regular parking restrictions, the related Staff report notes.
Those parking their vehicles on the street are still required to adhere to all other parking rules, including not parking on the street when it would interfere with snow clearing.
The holiday parking allowances are therefore “null and void during a winter weather event,” a Town spokesperson told Bullet Point News—highlighting the importance of checking weather forecasts when parking vehicles on a Town roadway.
“The success of these parking restrictions relies on the cooperation of the entire community. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, utilize off-street parking options, and communicate these regulations to neighbours and visitors,” the Town stated in a recent press release.
The Town also informed Bullet Point News that there is an on-call extension strictly for plow drivers to contact Stouffville’s by-law officers for the purpose of illegal on-street parking enforcement when it interferes with snow removal.
