Mandy Lam, a resident of Stouffville since 2015, was recently honoured with the Third Writing Prize from Dream Quest One for her short story titled “What Doesn’t Fit In Red Pockets.”
Dream Quest One organizes competitions in poetry and writing, aiming to inspire, motivate, and encourage anyone with literary interests.
With a focus on promoting diversity in literature, Lam advocates for increased storytelling from the Chinese community through her work.
“I have been creating stories that share my childhood experiences as a Chinese immigrant with the theme of empathy and kindness,” Lam stated.
Lam is also a math professor in Toronto, and her work has been published by City Parent magazine, the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education, and the Ontario Journal of Environmental Education.
“In 2013, I completed a course in creative writing for publishing and became passionate about creating literary content that allows STEM and creativity to intertwine,” the author explained.
She has authored two children’s books with this purpose in mind: “Seven Ate Nine” and “The Humdrum Party at the Zoo.” These titles are available for purchase on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble.
A mother of two daughters, Lam actively advocates for early math development through storytelling, play, and imagination. You can find her on Instagram here.
