- With Stouffville preparing for the 2023 Terry Fox Run at Memorial Park this Sunday, organizers have announced Andrea Smith as this year’s run ambassador.
- In 2022, at the age of 44, the mother of two was diagnosed with incurable Stage 4 colon cancer. She will be in attendance at the event.
- “We feel immensely proud and grateful to support and be involved with the Terry Fox Foundation,” Trevor Easton, Andrea’s husband, said in a recent press release. “Not only does Terry’s story give Andrea courage and hope, it is a constant reminder to her—especially on her hardest days—to not give up.”
- He commended the donors and the funds raised to support cancer research, and he will share more of their family’s cancer journey before the run begins.
- The event begins at noon on Sunday, September 17, with refreshments courtesy of numerous local businesses and residents, a musical performance by Stouffville’s Muffin Men Band, children’s activities hosted by Code Ninjas, and a classic car display thanks to the Markham Stouffville Cruisers.
- The opening ceremony starts at 1 p.m. with warm-up exercises, a salute to Stouffville cancer survivors, a message from Ambassador Smith and the event’s co-chairs, and a performance of Canada’s national anthem by the local duo Dave & Sarah.
- Participants can choose to run, walk, cycle, rollerblade, or even push a stroller, and registration is still open at the Stouffville Run’s website.
- Donations are still being accepted through the same website. Nearly $43,000 of the $70,000 goal had been raised at time of publishing.
- Residents can also register individuals, teams, survivors, and volunteers by emailing organizers or calling (416) 768-6971.
- 34 Stouffville teams have already registered, and more information is available on the event’s website.
