UPDATE: The swimming advisory has just been lifted after York Region processed a follow-up test showing safe levels of bacteria.
York Region’s 2023 Summer Beach Water Testing Program monitors water quality at 14 beaches.
A recent test at Musselman’s Lake’s Cedar Beach presented high enough levels of E. Coli to warrant a swim advisory.
Such levels of E. Coli and other bacteria can result in stomach illness and ear, eye, nose, and throat infections.
While advisory signage is posted for Cedar Beach, others enjoying the lake in the surrounding area should also exercise caution.
“If you cannot see your feet when standing in water up to your knees it may be unsafe to swim due to the level of bacteria in the water,” York Region states.
Bullet Point News has reached out to York Region for greater detail on test results but did not hear back in time for publishing.
York Region tries to test all beaches twice weekly, so a return to an “Acceptable” beach status is hopefully coming soon.
Musselman’s Lake area residents can find updated Cedar Beach testing results here.
York Region recommends the following measures to help protect lake water quality:
Area residents should ensure plumbing fixtures are properly connected to sewers and septic systems.
Do not feed area animals or birds.
Do not leave your garbage behind when you visit the lake.
Clean up after your pets.
Practice pollution-free boating.
Do not go into the water if you have an infection or open wound.
